Conjunctivitis In Jaripatka

Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye, is an inflammation or infection of the conjunctiva, which is the thin, transparent layer of tissue that lines the inner surface of the eyelids & covers the white part of the eye. It can affect one or both eyes and is characterized by symptoms such as:
  1. Redness: The white part of the eye may appear pink or red due to blood vessels becoming more prominent.
  2. Itching: The eyes may feel itchy and irritated.
  3. Tearing: Excessive tearing or watery discharge from the eyes.
  4. Discharge: Depending on the cause, there can be different types of discharge, such as clear and watery, thick and yellow or green, or a combination.
  5. Swelling: The eyelids may become puffy or swollen.
  6. Sensitivity to light: Bright lights may cause discomfort.
Conjunctivitis can be caused by various factors:
  1. Viral Conjunctivitis: Caused by viruses, similar to the common cold. It’s highly contagious and often accompanied by cold-like symptoms.
  2. Bacterial Conjunctivitis: Caused by bacteria and often leads to a thick, sticky discharge. It’s also contagious.
  3. Allergic Conjunctivitis: Triggered by allergens like pollen, dust, or pet dander. It can affect both eyes and is usually associated with itching and tearing.
  4. Irritant Conjunctivitis: Caused by irritants like smoke, chemicals, or foreign bodies. It typically affects one eye and does not spread.
  5. Neonatal Conjunctivitis: Occurs in newborns and can be caused by various factors, including infections acquired during childbirth.
Treatment depends on the underlying cause:
  • Viral Conjunctivitis: Typically resolves on its own within a week or two. Artificial tears can help with discomfort, and cold compresses may soothe symptoms.
  • Bacterial Conjunctivitis: Antibiotic eye drops or ointments are often prescribed to clear the infection.
  • Allergic Conjunctivitis: Avoiding allergens and using antihistamine eye drops can help alleviate symptoms.
  • Irritant Conjunctivitis: Flushing the eye with clean water and avoiding the irritant usually leads to improvement.
To prevent the spread of conjunctivitis, especially the viral and bacterial types, practice good hygiene:
  • Wash your hands frequently.
  • Avoid touching your eyes with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid sharing personal items like towels or makeup.
  • Use clean tissues or disposable wipes to clean discharge from your eyes.
